Fellowes WriteRight Universal Screen Protectors Review

I recently upgraded my cell phone to one that has a large touch-screen style menu. My son recommended I use a screen protector to prevent scratches, and he suggested I use WriteRight Universal Screen Protectors. There are 5 pieces of film (4.25" x 3.25") in the package I purchased and, according to the cover, the protectors are "Easy to customize, Leaves no residue, and Reduces screen glare." Generally speaking, they are right. The instructions are clear and concise and the pictures are very helpful.

What they don't tell you is the protection film scratches very easily. But the most significant omission is just how difficult the film is to apply bubble and dust-free. The sticky side of the film attracts dust and particles like a magnet. They provide a small piece of cardboard to squeeze the bubbles out; what a frustrating process! In addition, if particles do attached to the sticky side, you will have a fun time trying to remove the bubbles they create and may scratch the phone screen in the process. Moving the piece of cardboard across the film will also scratch the film. This is the first time I've applied film, so a friend suggested wetting the edge of the cardboard before trying to remove bubbles. I haven't tried that, but I'm not sure I want to get water that close to my phone.

As you can see, my experience with the WriteRight Universal Screen Protectors was definitely a mixed bag. I'm sure I will become a more proficient protector applier after a few tries. A package of 5 protectors retails for $8 and change. For best results, the instructions recommend removing the protector after just a month and applying a new one. Not at that price and process!
